Sewer backup protection
A backwater valve is installed on the private plumbing system to reduce sewer backup risk when municipal sewers surcharge. Homeowners must understand that when a valve is closed, fixtures should not be used because water may not drain.

What we inspect
- Basement plumbing fixtures and floor drain clues
- Sump pit condition, pump age, alarm and backup power
- Backwater valve location, access, and maintenance concerns
- Discharge route and visible drainage risks
- Permit, inspection, invoice, and photo documentation needs
How it relates to the City subsidy
Some work may be eligible for Toronto’s Basement Flooding Protection Subsidy Program if the home, contractor, work category, timing, and documents meet City requirements. The City makes the final decision.
